Aug 6 - Vernal, UT to Rangely, CO
Today was an R&R day on the Pac Tour following yesterday’s long ride. We had lots of Rest and a little Rain on our short ride into Rangely, Colorado. The rain was light and could have easily been confused with perspiration from other riders but I did see a rain jacket pop open during the morning. I think it may be the first rain this area has had since the Jurassic era (in keeping with today’s dinosaur theme).
Everyone slept in this morning and then enjoyed a group breakfast at the motel’s café which was a nice break from the daily parking lot fare, although I really like the PAC breakfasts. The relaxed atmosphere helped set the riding tone for the day.
Today’s ride was only 50 miles long but included the breakfast, two sag stops, and a picnic lunch in the park when we rode into Rangely. We basically ate every hour all morning long with some really good banana nut bread taking the culinary honors on the road today.
Our first SAG stop was at the Dinosaur Monument Visitor’s Center:

We then left Utah for good and entered Colorado:

Craig was feeling much better today and kept our relaxed pace from becoming too pedestrian. He’s ready to ride again. Colorado recognizes Craig’s recovery, although he’s not quite 90 years old:

Welcome to Dinosaur, Colorado:

Lunch in the park was another hit with the group. We had homemade burritos and root beer floats. We definitely are going to either have to ride some more miles this afternoon or call Jenny Craig. David is looking particularly floated after his lunch.

Today was fun; I enjoyed the break an am looking forward to some great rides in the Colorado Rockies in the upcoming days.
Here are today’s ride stats:
Distance: 52 miles
Ride Time: 3 hours
Avg Speed: 17.3 mph
Climbing: 2000 feet
Avg Power: 178 Watts

Hey Chip,
What a great time you seem to be having. Yes, I would agree that your hardest day out there is probably better than yor easiest day in the office.
In your honor I rode a century yesterday. there was probably 7,500 feet of climbing and it was 97 degrees so I was dying. But no dinosaurs to look at.
Keep on truckin'
I'll be readin'
